Food is a speciality here at the Taynuilt Hotel and just as important as the preparation and presentation is the provenance of the food.
One of those producers is Torbreck Vintners of Barossa Valley, South Australia. We now offer some of their finest estate wines in our restaurant and bar, but it’s not just the quality of their wine that intrigues us it’s also the local connection with the Oban area.
Local boy, Gregg McGill caught the wine bug when he was playing rugby in Ireland. Not actually in the process of playing rugby you understand, but when he was attending a wine dinner in Galway. Subsequently, when Gregg was unable to play rugby for a while due to injury, he completed his WSET Diploma and got a job with a family run wine company in Ireland. That was it, he was hooked.
Gregg is now a winemaker in the Barossa Valley and knows that the Australian wine industry is now a serious player in the fine wine market. Said Gregg: “When you think about the vineyard growing lineage here In the Barossa, we actually have some of the oldest plantings of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro in the world, meaning all our vines are still on their original root stocks. It was Dave Powell, one of the winemakers, who noticed how valuable these old vines may be to the fine wine market in the future, and set about creating Torbreck and looking to preserve the history of the Barossa old vines.”
We are as delighted as Gregg with the wines coming from this estate and we’ll bring you some more news about the wines, vintages and tasting notes in further bulletins, so look out for more at a later date.
