I am a very big fan of the producer MDC. Named after friend and investor of Henri Forner, the family run winery in Cenicero (in the sub-region of Rioja Alta) produces wines with a hint of French influence.
At the start of the 1960’s the Forner family had proudly restored two abandoned Chateaux in Bordeaux which to this day are looked on as two of the finest properties in the region.
The vineyard is now overseen by Henri’s daughter Cristina and her family and the vines she cares for run deep into the chalky clay soil in this sunny micro climate parcel of land.
The great thing about Marques de Cáceres wine is the consistency they have achieved; “The House” style, combined with the French Influence from the history of the family and also the services of Michel Rolland who is Wine Consultant for the Bodegas.
So French wine making expertise and techniques combined with the climate and soil of Rioja Alta and native Spanish grapes gives us some of the finest modern examples of Rioja.

The MC 2009 – made with 100% Tempranillo which is simply stunning. We opened a bottle last year in the company of a travelling Somm from Australia no less. It was drinking very well but still has time on it. The MC is aged in French oak barrels for 15 months. Decanted and given a time to develop this wine has quite a fresh bouquet, there is a hint of spice and a violet note also comes through well. On the palate there is a delicious roundness of the tannins, a superb wine.
Satinella – This sweeter, fruity, delicious wine brings great memories for me, I have enjoyed it many times with loved ones and friends. Made from Viura grapes it also has a small presence of Malvasia and the grapes are harvested later when they are very ripe and concentrated. It is a wine that we love to open for any occasion.
